2 :
You must make sure that the carrier you want to use on your IPhone with, use GSM technology. I believe the IPhone is a world phone, but most carriers works on 850, 1900mhz. If the carrier you are planning to use works on CDMA, the it won't work. Also, the IPhone must be jailbreak (unlocked).
3 :
The phone will work as far as AT&T being GSM which (I believe) is what is also used in Portugal. You will need to contact your cellphone provider there to see if they have the capability of activating this on their network there. I have absolutely no idea on the systems they are using. Here, even if a phone is available on multiple networks, it is extremely difficult to get one carrier to activate a like-model phone that was manufactured for a different service provider. So from a technical point of view, the phone will work in Portugal; it now depends on whether or not your service provider can and will support you in this endeavor and activate it for you.
4 :
Yes. The iPhone 4 can already work in Portugual. But in the interest of saving money & for it to work on local carriers, it'll have to be unlocked. The iPhone 4 is available unlocked from Canada, France & the UK but you'll have to have a contact in one of those countries in order to get it, since it can not be purchased from outside of said country.
5 :
Yes it will work in your country.
6 :
In many countries you can buy the iPhone with or without a subscription. Needless to say that the ones WITH a subscription are mosty locked; this means you will have to unlock/disconnect them (you can have this done for approx. 30 euro). If you buy without subscription, the iPhone 4 is much more expensive, easily up to 740 euro for the 32GB model. Also, in most countries they are sold out. In Singapore and Hong Kong they are the cheapest; approx. 600 euro for the 32GB model. The warranty (guarantee) for iPhone is NOT worldwide, only for the country you bought it in. The iPhone definitely works in Portugal with all GSM networks, you do need a micro-sim from your local provider though!!!

Apply for jobs online. Make it so you leave in the morning. Lie if you have too. But they cannot control you. So apply to every place you can and do the job. If they try to stop you just ignore them. When you have enough, move out. If you do not do this, you will live with your family and be in the same condition you are now.

Will my ( european) computer work in USA

Will my ( european) computer work in USA ?
I'm going to the US for three months an I'm taking my computer and I heard that here in POrtugal the electricity works in 50Herzt ( or Ghertz, I don't know ) but in the US it works in 60 hertz. So, will I be able to charge the batteries of my computer there? If it doesn't, is there anything I can buy to "adapt the differences of hertz" ?

Most laptops have universal 100- 240V power adaptors. If that's the case with your laptop, you only need a plastic adaptor to fit the power plug in a US outlet. They sell them at the airport and electronic stores.
2 :
It will work fine. All computers these days run directly off of DC, and the power supply units directly convert the incoming AC to DC, and the circuits they use to do that do not care about line frequency at all.
3 :
Check your users/owners manual to see if your laptop's battery charger can be used on 120 volts. If it can then you are all set. If not you will an power converter to change 120 volts to 230 volts. They can be bought at electronic stores and luggage shops. No need to be concerned about the currents frequency; it will be going through a full wave rectifier and converted to DC.

What is the best way to travel Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Turkey

What is the best way to travel Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Turkey?
I am thinking of flying into lisbon (portugal) and then just working my way across to turkey, in the order of portugal spain italy greece, then turkey, and than flying back home from there. Is the best way to do this by train? Should I buy a cheap used car and just drive my way across?
Other - Europe - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Train would be easier, and the rail system in most of europe is good (check the europass to see if it works for you). buying a car would probably be a red tape nightmare, since you'd have to conform to the regulations of five different governments. Also look at http://www.hostelworld.com/ to make low-cost reservations. Enjoy!
2 :
A cruise would be the easiest, because it would go to a lot of the Greek islands.
3 :
The only "jump" you have to do is between Spain and Italy, since they don't border and it'll took several hours by train (you have to go through France) and between Italy and Greece there's the sea; so, Portugal/Spain by train; Spain to Italy by flying is the fastest way, though train and ship are possible; from Southern Italy you could enjoy a ferry, while if you leave Italy for Greece by the Center or North, it's better a fly. Then Greece/Turkey by train.

Most definitely. Drug decriminalization is the only way to put an end to the drug cartels, any other initiative only makes the prices rise and the mafias stronger. An besides drug use is a matter of individual freedom and self ownership. I ,as a Mexican citizen know first hand the evils of drug prohibition and would be glad if the got decriminalized in the US, the biggest consumer. (and Mexico)

Truth is governments will NEVER stop drug use.don't care how hard they try.Just waste billions [$ £] of money. Having treatment centres [polices?] is the way forward. Remove the criminal element. Or "cool" factor. And the money aspect by having "authorised" drug centres -controlled by governments. Would prevent criminals earning any money out of drugs - would seek other sources of income.

It will take some time for the majority of the American public to catch on to the fact that decriminalizing drugs is perfectly reasonable. As it stands, it would be political suicide for any lawmaker to suggest it.

your gauge manifold has a built in temp and pressure reading on it .it also depends on which ref your using 22 134 516 etc.

there are many factors that you have to consider outside temp inside temp type of refrigerant type of metering device i recommend taking a class .charging a system should be done by a trained tech. good luck

how hard is living for a british graduate in portugal

how hard is living for a british graduate in portugal?
im currently on my final year of a degree in international tourism management, priorto which iv completed a foundation degree in sport and adventure management.after i graduate im hoping to go travel and gain some valuable work experience and make a bit of money, doing odd jobs but im hoping to make a career out of tourism, adventure, extreme sports or something similar eventually.iv had previous work experience in bars, hotels, garden centres and lifeguarding in a leisure centre but nothing big.i also have basic first aid training.for years i have wanted to escape to doom and gloom of british life and move somewhere warm for a better lifestyle than my parents could give me as a kid.im toying with the idea of several european countries including portugal, france and spain. what is life like for brits moving out to portugal?iv visited the algarve 4 times but wouldnt mind getting out to explore and see other areas.id be happy living anywhere relatively well populated and reasonably coastal.as a british citizen i wont have trouble with immigration but i know that the euro is very expensive at the moment and the european jobs and financial crisis is no better than the UK one.i dont know any portuguese but i tend to learn useful phrases fairly quickly.my family have a couple of friends in the algarve.im a culturally open person and will always make an effort,im definitely not one of those brits that bosses around locals and only speaks english.i have a few questions about general living in portugal: -how expensive is portugal compared to the UK? -how difficult is it finding work in portugal, particularly in the algarve? -how well do portuguese people speak english? -is there anything or anyone/dangers i should avoid? -what do portuguese girls think of english men? -where should i start if im hoping of going, just to find casual work to begin with, should i apply before i go or fly out there and see what i can find? any information from british expats or portuguese will be helpful,thanks!..

Hello friend, this question comes in handy. =P I'm Portuguese, from the Algarve, and i also work in tourism (in a hotel, to be more specific). As you know, having been to the Algarve, you know that this region has a lot of potential in what concerns tourism. It is one of the most visited places by British people in the world. And one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. To you, having the pound £ as currency, things will be easier, if you intend to make a living here. Seeing as the pound is the most valuable currency right now. Things here are cheaper than the UK, since the minimal wage here is one of the lowest in Europe, things tend to be cheaper as well. But i warn you that the Algarve, by being the most touristic region of Portugal, is more expensive than the rest of the country. But still a lot cheaper than the UK. The Algarve lives of tourism, and since the sun and beach product only prevails mainly during the summer, during winter a lot of people become unemployed, mostly Portuguese. If you want to own your own business, and if you have enough money to open it (restaurant, bar, etc) things might be easier, since you own the place and set the rules. But the winter is weak. You might wanna close the establishment during these months. Here everyone speaks English. Obviously not people above 50 / 60 years old. But below that age most of us here in the Algarve speak English, and many even speak German. Like i said, we live of tourists here. Didn't quite understood what you meant by "dangers" but if you are asking if the Algarve is safe, i garantee it is. One of the safest places in Europe. There is a lot of mixing over here. And we are a very kind and accepting people. Portuguese women might be interested in English men, but that deppends really. Money, success, looks, etc. Regarding your last question, come here first in "vacation", meanwhile, try to find some work (with contract), just to get you started and residence, then go back to England, get your things ready, then you can come. Hope my information helped and if you need any more advices don't hesitate to contact me on my yahoo answers e-mail. By the way, i'm from Lagos.

Nop, it's really difficult for any doctor to work in mexico,. no foreign doctor at the moment, maybe if u study a master or take specialization course maybe u'll be able to get a job in mexico.... there is a surplus or medical perssonel nowadays... sorry why don't u try leaing for canada or new zealand.
2 :
The answer is not all that simple. It is a very long and arduous process for a physician to become licensed in Mexico. (Normally takes a couple of years) plus you would need to be 100% bi-lingual. try contacting this person who works at the American Consulate in Vallarta her name is Kelly Trainor and her email is consularagentpvr@prodigy.net.mx- she has all of the listings of qualifications, necesities, etc. you are not going to make big bucks in Mexico. our family doctor in Rosarito Beach drives a 4 year old aerostar van and lives in a somewhat modest house. he has a one person office with no receptionist or nurse. Most Mexican people enter the medical proffesion for all of the right reasons, not for money or prestige. I wish you luck in your endeavor.

Portugal is a touristic country, therefore there are work for tour guides here. Psychologists, there are a lot of them around here nowadays, and for translators I don`t think there`s a huge job market here neither. You can study there and come to work here, no problem with that, only for those jobs...

I guess you should read more about job description for job of such a type here - jobsearch.22web.net
4 :
The market is full of people doing the same as you can do. Touristic guides here are controlled by the union because as long as there is one without work nobody gets a job as a tourist guide if not well prepared for it and in the union. The winter is long and they have to eat all year round. Do not forget tourist guides in Portugal with 4 or more languages are common. Psychologists- The market is full. You might find a low payed job in a small firm questioning new employees. Translators are to many and quite good. Difficult market unless you know a very strange language. Not so common to be found. We speak several languages in this country. Of all you ask I hope you speak and translate a difficult language.

You have to substitute the american SIM (from the phone) to a Portuguese SIM. First, it is necessary to ensure that the phone is GSM (to work with SIM) and has the appropriate GSM bands (consistent with the Portuguese networks). Before you travel you should ask the American company, for example Cingular to unlock your phone. After two or three days you will receive an email with the code. This code is only entered after you put the new SIM, so keep the code along with the rest of the things necessary for the trip. When you arrive here you need to buy a card in one the cellphone companies (for example you TMN, Vodafone, Optimus ...) The card has dimensions of a credit card and within it is the SIM that stands out easily and to put in the phone. The card is also an area to scrape that shows a 4 digit pin. It is very important not to throw out the card because this pin is required whenever the phone is disconnected and then connected again. In it also is the puk code, which is used in case of having pressed the worond Pin code after the three chances you have. The prices differ between companies but it should cost you from 5 to 20€. Have a safe flight and a nice stay!

Breakfast as with most food in Portugal is fairly similar to NZ and Australia, but as they now use the Euro for their currency things cost around double the NZ dollar, you will find that nearly all the bigger hotels have a full range of breakfast foods including full English, the Portuguese do eat a lot of fruit for breakfast. The biggest problem you will have is getting a decent cup of coffee, they drink very small cups of espresso mainly,so ask for Americano with milk. You will have fun with this.

No, Portuguese nationality does not mean you can emigrate to Canada to work. You would have to apply for a visa, and you can read more about this on their official site here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp Having Portuguese nationality means you are free to seek work in any of the EU member countries, but Canada is not in the EU (or even Europe) so this makes no difference.

3 :
Bla bla is right. If you want to live and work in Canada you must have a visa. Similar in the States. You must obtain a visa for student or work but visas are just for a temporary time. You may also live in the States for about three or six months, you are not allowed to work in this country when you are here. You have to go back to Portugal after this time. If you want to live and work in the United States as a permanent resident, it now takes longer, about ten years wait for your green card. Now that we have a new president, our immigration laws probably will be changing. Good luck

Portugal is an EU country....you will need a residence permit to live in Portugal as well as a work permit to work in the EU. That may or may not be easy to get. First comes the job though.....If you have someone who is hiring you in Portugal then if they can show you as a prospective employee to the govt. office then you can apply for resident permit/ID card. If you are going to be self-employed then that is a different matter and I can't help you there. I will say that it is very easy to come and go from the EU if you are from the USA (I assume that is where you are) since you have an automatic three-month tourist visa upon arrival. It is even easy to work illegally but that is for laborer's work and I bet with real estate that wouldn't be possible. Basic advice: Get hired by someone and the rest comes easily. Good luck!
2 :
Well, i don't know if you speak portuguese, but if you don't you should go to Algarve because it will be easier for you since most of wealthy turists go there. But the market now is very bad, i wouldn't advise you to come with the present economical conditions.

I agree that the current work climate is really not good in Portugal. However a good place to look for the occasional job ad is in the English language papers, the Portugal News and the Algarve Resident, both of which are available online. Learn Portuguese now. The only jobs available to you if you can only speak English will be low end commission based jobs. Ben at http://www.movingtoportugal.org

You need to ask VISA that question before buying the cards.

" Can I use my Visa Gift card outside of the United States? If your gift card states Valid only in the United States on the front, your issuer has issued a Domestic Use Only card. Although your gift card will not be accepted at locations outside of the United States, it's welcome at millions of locations within the U.S. where Visa Debit cards are accepted. " I've seen those types of cards around here, I'm just not 100% sure if they were VISA . Ask that question at the customer service, they should be able to tell you for sure.

most visas will work world wide. Check on the back of the card....if you see a cirrus symbol you're good. Also check your Bank Card for cirrus, they can be used everywhere, and will automatically convert for exchange rates....though be carefull, usually it is a % or flat fee charge per use

The visa card should work no problems I don't know if Portugal uses the "chip & pin" as the UK does so the card will be read and a receipt that you will have to sign is produced. When my partner and I travel we purchase travellers cheques and she takes half and I the other half and cash them as needed. You can also use your ATM card in Canada just ask your bank for details.

If the card is considered a "credit card" that is authorized by VISA, it should work fine. In Canada, we swipe the card's magnetic strip through a card reader and the card's number and transaction authorization code is printed on a receipt. The merchant will ask you to sign one copy and will retain that for their records. You will be given a second copy for your records. If the card is actually some sort of debit card, it may work in the bank ATM system here as long as it is part of the CIRRUS or PLUS network.

first learn the language, is very important. I don't know what you can do so I can't answer the job part. you can talk to a travel agency in the US to get tourists and you be a touristic guide, there's so much to see in Lisbon that you wouldn't be far from home. Just an idea since I saw that been done by a British couple. Good Luck.
2 :
You are off to a good start as you have both family there for support and somewhere to stay. Don't expect great money, where we are the average monthly wage is €600. For jobs, contact the main tour operators in Lisbon and ask on expat forums where you will get advice from those who have been in the same position. Good luck.

Do Portuguese think Portugal is really such a bad place to live and work

Do Portuguese think Portugal is really such a bad place to live and work?
The reason why I'm asking this is because my husband's family and friends who live and work in Portugal think we're crazy for wanting to relocate to Portugal from the UK. Ok, so we know the wages are a lot less to that of the UK in comparison, but the cost of living and the taxes we pay in the UK surely mean that we're not necessarily getting a better deal by staying put? Why do some Portuguese think Portugal is a nightmare of a place to live and work in? I'd be interested to see people's views on this because if I'm honest I'm failing to see why my in-laws are so against us relocating. Husband is Portuguese by the way. :-) Wow, thanks for your answer José, you have given me a really interesting point of view which I like. I've never lived in Portugal but from what I can see the quality of life is much better than here, people seem to love living over there and appreciate life and family values one hundred times more than us over here. I love Portugal and Portuguese people and the language....it's a beautiful language and I love learning it and love hearing my husband speak it! I'm even a Portugal football supporter (watch me get lots of thumbs down from the England supporters now!!) It just frustrates me that so many people we speak to think Portugal is a terrible place to live. Thanks for your answer! Thank you MIG - thats an interesting point to make. I really love the answers so far and I'm definitely going to use them to challenge my in-laws and portuguese friends next time they tell us we are mad for wanting to move over to Portugal! ;-) Thanks again to both of you. Muito obrigado!

Good question. let me try to explain you: We, portuguese, are never satisfied with nothing. Maybe it's because of our latin and southeuropean mentality, maybe because of our very peculiar history (ask your husband...) The fact is we aren't arrogant like, for ex, the spanish and we tend to minimize our country in front of foreigners. Maybe it's because we prefer to criticize our house before others do it. (it sounds funny, but it is probably right.) The truth is, apart of our golden age (XV-XVI centuries), fado and football, we portuguese, IN FACT, are proud of many things about our country, like culture, monuments, traditions, food, wine, the peace, low violence and crimes, our language, etc. We know the bad things about Portugal but we also know that there are more countries around the world worse than us. (i usually say to my friends when they criticize portugal's health national system something like: "it could be worse. it could be like Afganisthan" lol) Of course is not a nightmare to live in Portugal. Just this morning my workmates were asking "how the hell the britisih can live in such a GREY country? always raining, fog, polution, etc." Of course when we travel abroad (in west Europe...) it's true that we feel inmpressed about the better stuff we find there... Natural, isn't it? For last i'll say some things - in my humble opinion - are better in Portugal than UK (been there 6 times): - Weather - Wine - Food - Cooffe (i mean, the expresso) - Polution - the sky light - security - tolerance - the "joie de vivre" (no translation needed) last, but not least, my advise is: come to Portugal, live and work here, and i'm sure you'll be very happy like...me!
2 :
Portugal is the best place to live. I'm a Portuguese living in Canada but I still think Portugal is the best place to live. I got married here wile visiting family. My experience with Portuguese emigrants is that they go to another country looking for a better life and they are so blind about other countries being better then Portugal that they forget all the good things they left behind. I know a lot of British couples living in Portugal and they love it. Weather, food, drinks, people and "futebol" are the things you will love the most. Good Luck

GO to CLIP. It's an International School in Porto. "Colégio Luso-International do Porto" They teach EVERYTHING in English. I bet they could get you to do something there. Even if it's just watching kids during recess playing. (:
2 :
I think you should learn the language, Local people will be rude to you If don't care to learn or show you want to adapt to the culture. I'm Portuguese in a English speaking country so I learn the language.
3 :
I'd agree with MIG, you would find it much easier to get work if you could at least speak the basics. I know it is easier said than done, but honestly, mastering basic Portuguese would not take long (even by teaching yourself with some books) then you would find it miles easier to find work, by searching through the classifieds in newspapers and online and by simply calling hotels etc and asking them outright. If you are very much in need of work asap though and don't have time to learn Portuguese, just call some hotels anyway! The chances of an English speaker being on the end of the line are high, so there shouldn't be any difficulties in that respect. It'll just be the communication afterwards you might have a problem with (unless the boss speaks english lol!!) Good luck!

Switzerland Transit Visa... Indian National.. 11 hrs stop over... Portugal Work Visa...?
I am an Indian National. I have valid work visa of Portugal (It is not a Schengen Visa). Going back to India (Mumbai) from Portugal (Lisbon) via Switzerland (Zurich) with 11 hrs stop over at night. Do i need a Transit visa for Switzerland? Can I go out of the airport and spend night at Hotel in Zurich?

Since April 2010 a long-stay national visa (Type D) issued for one Schengen country enables the stay in other Schengen countries for up to 90 days. You can stop over at Zürich and leave the airport without any formalities. The flight from Portugal to Switzerland is a Schengen internal flight without governmental immigration control. Also the following documents issued by Portugal authorize to visit Switzerland: • Título de Residência — (Residence Permit) • Autorização de Residência Temporária — (Temporary Residence Authorisation) • Autorizaçåo de Residência Permanente — (Permanent Residence Authorisation) • Autorização de Residência Vitalícia — (Residence Authorisation valid for life) • Cartão de Identidade de Refugiado — (Refugee Identity Card) • Autorização de Residência por razões humanitárias — (Residence Authorisation on humanitarian grounds) • Cartão de Residência de nacional de um Estado-membro da Comunidade Europeia — (Residence Permit of a national of an EC Member State) • Cartão de Residência Temporária — (Temporary Residence Permit) • Cartão de Residência — (Residence Permit) • Autorização de Permanência — (Permit of Stay) http://www.bfm.admin.ch/bfm/en/home/themen/einreise/merkblatt_einreise.html ..[see list 3a] People may ask "why do I need a certain document", the borders between Schengen countries are open and nobody controls it anyhow. Well, the airline companies have been obliged only to transport passengers which are properly documented and they will be subject to hefty fines should a random immigration inspection reveal that passengers have been transported which do not hold the required documents. http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_website_client.cgi?SpecData=1&VISA=&HEALTH=&page=both&NA=IN&AR=PT&TR=CH&DE=IN&VT=PT&EM=PT&PASSTYPES=PASS&user=SKYWEB&subuser=SKYWEB1 ..

Assuming you have a UK passport then you have an automatic right to both live and work in Portugal, it's one of the benefits of EC membership. You are automatically legal but I believe you have to register with the local police, just a formality. Opening a bank account is just as easy, just turn up at your chosen branch with your passport as ID and it can be done while you wait. Better would be to choose a bank that has branches in the UK and have them set up the account before you travel. That way it's available immediately on arrival. The biggest problem will be finding a job, to make it work will be difficult without a knowledge of the language and right now jobs are scarce in Portugal. Without the language you might find some work in the tourist spots but it will be seasonal rather than permanent. Ian M
2 :
I am from the UK and lived in Portugal for 4 years between 1999 and 2003. You do not need any documentation to work and live there, but when I opened my bank account I did need to supply my bank with a "Financas" identity number (this is similar to our National Insurance number). This can be applied for at the local Finance office (it is easy to obtain, but ask any portuguese person to help you if you cannot speak the language). One thing that Portuguese authorities are very strict on is bringing original copies of your documentation (and sometimes you have to have documentation translated and formally stamped, which can be done at a lawyers office, or the British Embassy in Lisbon). Portugal is a wonderful country and the people are amazing - so much so, I married one of them :-) Boa viagem e boa sorte!

Can you check with the place where you bought the phone? I believe it will, but I'm not an expert on phone service there...best bet, check with them. If you bring it with you, and it doesn't work...will you have lost anything? (assuming you don't lose the phone, itself!)
2 :
No. You will be working on "roaming" service. That means even if you phone Portugal from Portugal you will be doing it trough Spain. All the phone calls you get in Portugal from Spain or any other country you are paying from Spain until the border and than Portuguese will charge you for the call inside Portugal. That's the way it works everywhere. Don't forget unless you choose one specific phone server when in Portugal the system will chose the stronger server at the moment you phone. So you might get home and have a bill with 3 different phone servers. Ask Movistar about prices or go to there site. Its all there.

How did they manage that? They must have used a converter of some kind as well, as in Europe we use 220 volts, unlike the 110 volts in the US. If I were you I'd just buy what I need in Europe and have done with it. You'd easily spend as much converting your electrical system anyway, and it would work out easier in the long run to be able to plug in appliances you buy locally.
