Astigmatism -> could it become worse after 4 months

Astigmatism -> could it become worse after 4 months?
4 months ago i went to an ophthalmologist and she told me i was starting to develop astigmatism. It was really few, it's like, i have 0.75 in my left eye and my right eye is perfect. She told me if i had no headaches i had nothing to worry about. But 2 months ago i got a job where i have to work 8 to 10 hours per day in front of a computer and i find it hard to focus my sight whilst working on little details, which is what i do all the time! Surely i have to wear glasses, even if it's only for working. well.. now the other question is: i don't want to spend 70 euros to go to an ophthalmologist again, neither have to wait 1 month to get an appointment in public health system (it's how things work in Portugal, unfortunately). So, i want to go to a store and make a free sight test, as some places do. The thing is, some people say they aren't such accurate, and my father was a case who confirms that. i have the examination results, so i can compare. but it was 4 months ago. Could it get worse after that time? oh and i forgot to mention, my eyes kinda hurt in the end of every day.

im not sure about it getting worse, but im pretty sure you should be wearing glasses, i know tonnes of people who have this condition and it means that one of their eyes moves in and doesnt focus well, so they need glasses to correct it. i would get your eye test done at a store, compare it to your current test...its free you say, so you haent got anythign to lose, if its pretty similar then you will know, and if they are simiar you can get your own glasses arranged online. i cant afford glasses from the opticians, so i get mine online for a quarter of the price, if not more, and they are just fine:)
2 :
Did the doctor give you glasses? You should have gotten a prescription even for a slight astigmatism. I have actually the same situation after I had my baby 4 months ago and I was given prescription eyeglasses even if it was only for reading. I was told to wear them at the computer as well because I was getting headaches because of my eye sight. So you need to get glasses.

get them to say it again and record it somehow. report them
2 :
Loco si yo fuera usted. If I were you I would have given him a platano smack. But without any violence, check with your work place and ask if there was any video cameras around that probably recorded it. If he doesn't stop then report him. Remember theres always that platano.
3 :
Relax and forget it: it's not worth the hassle. BTW that's Spanish and Portuguese.
4 :
You should report it to human resources and or someone who is in higher authority than that person who called you that! That is harassment and it should be taken seriously and dealt with right. Sorry to hear that other people are rude and don't respect you at your place of work. Good luck honestly.
5 :
I agree, try to get them on tape or if at all possible, video. If not, just report them and try to find some witnesses before you report it, otherwise you might be made to look like a fool because everyone will back the other guy, in which case you really should have him on tape to prove it. Ah, yeah, definitely get to talking to someone in high authority, not just the supervisor or wherever you work, unless you know for sure they're willing to take it up to executives. Because most people will just brush it off and say "that's life" and it could keep happening. Bullying in the workplace where I live is taken very seriously, after a teenage girl committed suicide after about a year and a half of verbal, physical, mental and emotional abuse at her workplace. It was horrible to hear about, let alone experience.

You do speak spanish/portugal? spanish is a language but portugal is a country, not a language.

Tell them to go report themselves to their superior. Record their response.

yes - it worked in portugal http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1893946,00.html no - it didnt work in other countries http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/debate/myths/myths4.htm

All drugs should be illegal...including asprin.
3 :
Making drugs legal isn't going to make a drug addict quit. Therapy (rehab) is used in place of prison sentences in America for some people caught with drugs, but most of the time the drug addiction is too strong to be "cured" this way. The best way to deal with the drug epidemic is through prevention and decriminalizing drugs is not going to do that at all.
4 :
NO!
5 :
No You can't tax decriminalized drugs. You can tax legalized drugs.

Al drugs must have an prescription or otherwise it must be illegal

Hi Evora is a great city with everything you might need. Not much to say about that. I just want to warn you about the heat!!!! Get ready to melt in summer time!!! I'm not joking....you can fry an egg on the floor!! Best wishes and bring tons of summer clothes!
2 :
Good choice! Évora is an old and historic city (with a university, that is one of the oldest in Europe (!!!!)) The place is good for familiy and children - alentejanos (the people from Alentejo), are very friendly, but you have to respect their customs! (for ex: there are many orange trees in Évora. Don't pick a single orange...) It has a very interesting cultural life. Shopping is so so. Jobs, you don't find a lot... PS - In summer, heat can really melt your brain. In winter, is also cold (well, for Portugal's standarts...)
3 :
Evora is too far to commute to Lisbon but if you want to relax then you have a good place. for jobs, entertainment and shopping no but to raise kids yes.
4 :
Evora is a small town in the middle of the country, in the part of Portugal called Alentejo. It is beautiful and with lots of history (the have some marvellous Roman ruins there). It is small and quiet and relatively safe for children. I don't think there will be a lot of job posibilities for foreigners there. The bus fra Evora to Lisbon takes approx. 2 hours.
5 :
Yes, is a beautiful city, with lots of monumments and very safe. In Summer is hot.

How can I measure ingredients for baking without scales? Please help daughters birthday emergency

How can I measure ingredients for baking without scales? Please help daughters birthday emergency!?
Hi, it is my daughters birthday and she wants fairy cakes which would be very simple if we wernt living in Portugal on my husbands work contract and have no scales!! I normally use 125g of flour, butter & caster sugar & 2 eggs (plus a bit of milk) Can anyone please either help me convert that, or give me a different recipe please. I am from the UK so if you are a kind US reply I have no idea what a cup is??? Thank you so much!
Cooking & Recipes - 6 Answers

1 :
125g flour is generally equal to 1 cup (8 oz). Even though weight is a better way of baking, most American recipes are reflected in volume measurements for ease.
2 :
a cup of flour is about 110 grams.
3 :
Well, I am US and I do try to always be kind - so here is my answer: One pound of flour is roughly 3 1/2 cups and one pound equals 455 grams. So 455 divided by 3 1/2 = 130 grams per cup. Roughly. Here is more: All-purpose Flour and Confectioners' Sugar U.S. Cups Grams 1/8 cup 15 grams 1/4 cup 30 grams 1/3 cup 40 grams 3/8 cup 45 grams 1/2 cup 60 grams 5/8 cup 70 grams 2/3 cup 75 grams 3/4 cup 85 grams 7/8 cup 100 grams 1 cup 110 grams This is from a "Continental Cooking" Cookbook I often use.
4 :
Do you mean convert it to oz? I'm not sure what you need converting, esp. if you aren't using cups... but anyways, one ouce is equal to 28.35 g. Seems like a small cake recipe...
5 :
It should be easy to get the weight of the butter approximately right, just estimate the weight going by the overall weight of the butter in the pack (eg half a 250g pack). Then you could improvise a set of scales with eg a ruler, some string and some plastic bags. adjust the amounts of sugar and flour until they weigh the same as the butter and each other. good luck!
6 :
I know it probably a little to late, but there is a website that has very a very accurate weight/volume conversion program: http://www.gourmetsleuth.com Just click "conversions" on the menu bar at the top and the rest is self-explanatory.

Wedding first dance song - i'm Scottish

Wedding first dance song - i'm Scottish?
At our wedding I want to have a Portuguese song as our first dance. The reason being I went to work in Portugal and heard this song which I absolutely loved. Obviously it is in Portuguese with no English version. When I came home I let my partner hear it and he loved it too and since then we both listen to it a lot. My partner and I have agreed we would like to dance to it at our wedding. Members of my family started to disagree, complaining that it was not "traditional". What should I do?

If you and your fiance love the song the go ahead and use it. It's your wedding. What the two of you want is all that matters. Don't let the naysayers change your mind. Families have waaay too many opinions when it comes to weddings and they certainly shouldn't get a say in what your first song is.

Hey, You are already doing a great job checking and double checking. If you are still afraid making mistakes maybe you can read up on the subject regards your work so you learn a bit more or maybe come in on a free day to practice. keep on looking after yourself. Over time you will make less and less mistakes. Also try to make many friends at work. Its much harder for a manager to single you out if you know a lot of people.

Can I obtain Portugal visit visa from UAE and travel from India?

You can apply for the visa at your country of residence or at your home country. For the visa application you must show an appropriate flight reservation. Should you plan to travel from India you would need to show such flight reservation and also show a departure flight reservation, either to India or to Dubai. If you plan to book a flight via London, United Kingdom you would also need to get a British Direct Airside Transit Visa although you stay in the international transit zone of the airport. Should you transit through other Schengen countries (Belgium, France, the Netherlands, or Spain) you will need to enter the country you arrive first in column 23. of the visa application since you would need to clear immigration in that country and proceed on to Portugal on a Schengen domestic flight without immigration controls. The visa application can be made up to three months prior to the planned travel date. The application in the United Arab Emirates must be addressed to the Embassy of Spain in Abu Dhabi which acts in behalf of Portugal for visa applications. http://www.maec.es/subwebs/Embajadas/AbuDhabi/es/MenuPpal/ingles/Consular/Visas/Paginas/visas.aspx .. An application from India must be addressed to the Portuguese Embassy in New Delhi through their commercial VFS application centre or the Portuguese Consulate General in Goa: http://www.embportindia.co.in/html/consular.html ..

Portugal is the Schengen country with the poorest online information about visa application. In general the requirements for a Schengen visa are similar however there may be local peculiarities which differ from country to country. Required documentation: • Schengen visa application form duly completed and signed by the applicant • two passport type photographs [35x45mm], in color and plain background • passport, valid for at least three months beyond the proposed stay • document evidence of the purpose of travel [statement of your studying institute; invitation of the Portuguese institute] • proof of the conditions of accommodation [hotel reservation] • proof of sufficient funds [bank statements]; at least €74.82 [~$110] plus €39.90 [~$59] per day of stay. • proof of travel health insurance which covers the costs arising from a repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or urgent hospital treatment, valid for the entire Schengen zone; the minimum coverage is €30,000 [$45,000]. For detailed requirements you should try to call during their [redicolous] operation hours or send an e-mail; alternately you could try to get information from the Newark consulate. New York Consul-General: Alexandre Manuel Galvão Mexia de Almeida Fernandes 590 Fifth Ave. - 3rd Floor New York, NY 10036 United States of America Opening hours: from 10 am to 2 pm Telephone: 1 212-221 31 65 Fax: 1 212-221 34 62 E-mail: mail@cgnyk.dgaccp.pt Newark Consul-General: Francisco Carlos Duarte Azevedo The Legal Center At one Riverfront Plaza, Main Floor Newark, New Jersey 07102-5414 United States of America Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 am to 1pm; Wednesday from 9 am to 5 pm Telephone: 1 973 643 4200 Fax: 1 973 643 39 00 E-mail: mail@cnnew.dgaccp.pt Edit: @Surbhi: Based on your answer I can tell you that you may apply up to three months before you plan to travel [common Schengen procedure]. Representatives of Portugal which issue visa are located at Washington D.C., Boston, Newark, New Bedford, New York, San Francisco, and Providence.

I am located at Kansas. I can't visit the consulate and calling them is'nt working. My main concern was if they have some deadline on the number of days in advance you need to apply before the visiting. Please, let me know if you have any information on this. Thanks :)

It is difficult to find work there. Japan, like most countries does not allow foreigners (Gi genes) to work in their country unless the job is needed and a Japanese isn't trained or qualified in that task and they have determined for some other reason it is good for the country to have you. They keep their unemployment very low and try to make sure everyone possible has a job. They are not mean, they are just overcrowded and need to protect their peoples jobs. Japan is a very small country with a large population.

I don't think you can, because you'll need an address in Portugal, and I'm not sure how it works for foreigners, as we have an Identity Card, which is used for every official request. These things in Portugal aren't as simple as they are in the UK. But just to be on the safe side, I would visit 'Loja do Cidadão' and I would ask them. http://www.portaldocidadao.pt/portal/pt/lojacidadao/ Or go directly to the department responsible for it (similar to Inland Revenue). http://www.e-financas.gov.pt/de/jsp-dgci/main.jsp When I got my fiscal number I paid nothing, I just filled in a form. The name of the card you are looking for is 'Cartão de Contribuinte.'

are whippets good around horses

are whippets good around horses?
I have a male whippet, and am going to work in Portugal for the summer in a Holiday riding centre and am bringing my 10 month old whippet with me, he's been around horses before, not that much though and jst wondering if anyone has any experience on what life is like in a yard for a whippet, and what trouble they can get themselves into
Dogs - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Depends on the horses, really. If they're good with dogs, then that's fine, but make sure your dog knows not to bother them too much or he might get kicked (which leads to broken ribs or a bruised lung, which is fatal for Whippets).
2 :
I believe it would be a much better idea to leave your dog with someone else while you are away. Whippets are sight hounds, they should never be fully trusted off leash. Small animals and quick movements kick their instincts into predator mode and they will not be easily detterred from the chase. I would not be comfortable having a Whippet around horses as, if they do get on the chase they are not going to be mindful about the dangers of the horses around them. How do you think it would go over to have your dog take off across the yard, zooming under and around the horses... recipe for disaster for your dog, the horses and other riders. If there are decent kennel facilities on the grounds for your dog to stay, that might be okay - I would still be worried about the process of moving a young dog into and out of another country.
3 :
its LEARNED I grew up on a dairy farm and yes had whippets! used an older gentle cow as a training dummy with each new pup - pup walked under cow & got what-for from me til they learn not to walk under cows.after learning that then need to watch out not to be stepped on, learning cows were not quarry to chase was easy, faster moving horses could be more a problem but my sister in law also had a whippet - and horses and the whippet would chase rabbits in the horse pasture.

Hi, Any Portuguese Citizens, or people currently living in Portugal

Hi, Any Portuguese Citizens, or people currently living in Portugal?
I am a Canadian Citizen, I'm 18 years old, and thinking about moving to Portugal. The main reason is to play football, learn Portuguese and discover the wonderful culture, as well as explore other parts of Europe. My question is how can I get a visa to work and live there? What do I need to do, and how long would you need to stay to become a citizen? Thanks for any help you can give me!

I'm leaving in Jan. for an exchange program in Portugal. I emailed the consulate in San Francisco (you'll have to contact one in Canada) and asked for visa requirements. The guy emailed me back this list (it could be quite different from one you might have to do, but it's a start): CONSULATE GENERAL OF PORTUGAL S. FRANCISCO - CALIFORNIA REQUIREMENTS FOR RESIDENCY VISAS TO PORTUGAL (Sections 1 and 2 for all applicants, subsequent section(s) as pertains to each applicant) 1VISA REQUIREMENTS One application form per passport holder (block printed or typewritten, please use only forms we supply you). One color passport photo size 2” x 2” facing forward. (Do not staple the photo to the application form). Write declaration of intent and economical status (description of yourself /purpose for staying in Portugal), including address where staying in Portugal, email address if applicable and all contact information. Police clearance issued within last 90 days (issued by local department - stating police record or lack thereof – for any applicant age 13 or older). Date issued must be clearly indicated. One photocopy of passport – main information page and any subsequent page with visa stamps. Medical certificate issued within last 90 days (simple statement showing that you are in good health including legible Doctors signature) Doctors name and date issued must be clearly indicated. Submissions by mail – must include notarization of applicants signature. If a minor, include parental consent form. Proof of health/accident insurance is required. Holders of domestic insurance without travel insurance need to provide declaration from the insurer that their coverage is valid in all Schengen states equal to 30,000 Euros. Processing fees of the above items – Residence/Study/ Temporary Long Stay/Work = $27.35. If visa is approved the following amounts are due in addition to the aforementioned processing costs - Temporary Long Stay $88.89/Residence or Work $109.40/ Study No Additional Charge. j) Requerimento - Registo Criminal, a form we provide you must be completed, signed and returned with the above. REFERENCE IN PORTUGAL, PREFERABLY THOSE WHO WOULD STAND AS GURANTORS We only need one reference who can be your lawyer, power of attorney, land lord, Dean of Admissions etc. who are Nationals of the European Community or hold Permanent Residence in Portugal. Have them indicate their name, address, phone number, citizenship – Include Copy of National ID or Residence. 3IF WORKING FOR SOMEONE Copy of work contract (authenticated by notary in Portugal) Contracts for salaried workers require prior approval from IEFP (Instituto de Emprego e Formação Profissional or from IGT (Inspecção Geral do Trabalho) if relevant. 4SELF EMPLOYED Proof that you are entitled to work in Portugal Photocopies providing transfer of funds to Portuguese banks Legalized copy of the registration proving establishment of commercial enterprise d) Declaration stating applicant’s official residence FOR BUSINESS Declaration passed by the Institute of Foreign Investment (ICEP) about the intended investment Photocopies of document(s) authorizing transfer of private capitals to Portuguese banks, issued by the Central bank (Banco de Portugal or its equivalent) Legalized copy of the registration of the corporation Declaration stating applicants official residence 5FOR PENSIONERS Must show proof of pension, total amount per month, and how the funds will be transferred to Portugal 6A PERSON LIVING ON HIS INCOME Movable Property Photocopies of a document authorizing the transfer of private capitals to Portuguese banks, issued by the Central bank (Banco de Portugal or an equivalent) = $3,000 per person Document confirming having deposited in Portuguese banks a sum equivalent to at least the the minimum monthly wage of the country of origin b) Immovable property Document of ownership Authenticated photocopies of updated leases and documents proving that the income is deposited in Credit Institutions in Portugal Hmm it won't let me answer again for some reason.

It was primarily a power thing. Having many colonies gave prestige to countries because it added wealth and resources. They sought other markets to sell their products to and trade with. Dear lara, the best is London England or Boston,USA to study because of large student population those 2 cities have. You can live a very energetic, lively and happy international life. You can apply for scholarships to universities there. www.tinyurl.com/3d93v8b
2 :
Hi there, your question is kind of difficult to answer. I can not think of too many countries of the top of my head that offer good universities, good job opportunities, and inexpensive cost of living. You mentioned the U.S. Yes, there are a lot of good universities in the U.S., however, the cost of living is not inexpensive, and the job market (at least at this time is not good). Also, in the U.S. you usually have no job security whatsoever. Although, the U.S. has some of the best hospitals and doctors in the world, the U.S. healthcare system is one of the worst in the western world. I would recommend to check out the following countries (good universities, inexpensive cost of living, good health care system). Argentina Chile Ecuador (Ecuador is the cheapest of these 3 countries) Job opportunities are better in Argentina and Chile than in Ecuador. Good luck.

Two teams: The champion (for the group stage) and the vice-champion (for the 3rd qualifying round), which means Braga have to achieve the 1st or 2nd place on Portuguese League to be qualified. (In 2012/2013 it will be 3: the champion and the vice-champion on the group stage and 3rd place on the 3rd qualifying round)

Its a gift to someone living here so they ask nothing. To charge it you go to any "pay shop". You step on one all the time and you can use money. Otherwise only in ATM's with a bank account here. I use Vodafone mobile server.

Answers is that the process is realatively painless, and if you are pressed for ID, a Passport will certainly be sufficient. Unless you are desperate to save those final few cents, incidentally <and that wouldn`t amount to much anyway>, I`d recommend that you look out for a turquoise-blue fronted phone shop under the house/brand name TNM (pronounced Tea-eN-Yem); part of PT, Portuguese Telecom. These outlets -they`re everywhere on the streets, but if you ARE unable or blind, go into practically ANYshopping centre and there`ll be one- are usually manned by students or quite smart youths, who regularly speak English; and who will not only sell and initialise your `phone, if you tell them you anticipated call regimen, they`ll also know the best tariff. They`re also where you top-up. Just one note of caution, if you buy -particularly an `unlocked` handset- and plan to use OUTSIDE of Portugal, make sure you mention this; tariffs and permissions aside, some sets are not equipped to operate `abroad`. Mobile are much more popular in Portugal than land lines, incidentally; and from memory in-country calls or SMSs can be as little as 2 or 3 cents a minute (more if both phones don`t belong to the same service provider: Vodaphone and Orange are alternative suppliers), with International calls from about 25 cents p.m. To reiterate CHOICE OF TARIFF (from many available) IS IMPORTANT.

If your English is really good, i'd suggest you go to London. There is a lot of money in tourism there and you could try to find your place.
2 :
If you are looking to use your knowledge of Spanish, try some of the resort areas in Spain such as Mallorca or Malaga, or anywhere on the Iberian coast. Amsterdam is probably the most "hip" city in Europe that I have been to, and English is very widely spoken there.

Why is Portugal lacking in the job market

I am wondering the reason why Portugal has such a huge problem with jobs. My family is from there and they talk about how so many people are getting laid off and it is very hard to find a new job. Many people or out of work and its causing allot of problems. Could anyone tell me what those problems are and what is causing this problem. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Portugal is a small economy with a considerable basis in agriculture. This makes things a bit more unstable. There are also a lot of pressures across the continent for consolidation and mergers. Growth tends to move in cycles. Portugal could greatly stimulate their economy by lowering taxes, reducing social costs, and being more inviting to business. Your country has so much going for it, a stimulating business environment could make them the next Silicon Valley or Scotland...

Garmin will hold both maps. Just make sure you have a good size SD card in the unit. I have a Nuvi 200w and can store 3 additional maps with a 2GB card.

How does currency conversion work with direct deposit

How does currency conversion work with direct deposit?
I am an American living in Portugal and working for the last few months and would like to have my Euros converted into USD when I leave here in a few weeks. If I have my money directly deposited into my American bank account will my bank charge a conversion fee or will the exact amount deposited into my account show up? I'm with US Bank but if there is anyone who HAS done this or KNOWS someone who HAS I would like to hear how they did it. Or if you have another good way of converting Euros to USD I would like to hear that too. I'm just trying to avoid high cost conversion fees by all means. Thanks...

In the money market the exchange rate of currency is constantly changing due to the market forces of supply and demand. If you deposit Euros into your account at say mid day, the bank would convert the Euros to USD at the exchange rate applicable at that time. The actual amount of USD that will go into your account will be that amount of USD less the percentage charged by the bank for its service exhanging the currency. It pays to shop around. You may find that a Money Exchanger may give you more USD for your Euros and then when you deposit these into your account at the bank there is no further charge. If you are earning a salary, why not ask your employer to pay you in USD and deposit this directly into your bank account each month. That way the agreed amount of USD salary should appear in your account without any deductions.

Stores to buy detox drinks in Amsterdam

Stores to buy detox drinks in Amsterdam?
Does anyone know of any? I made the stupid mistake of trying weed for the first time a few days ago. I regret it. I'm an American working in Portugal. I'm worried about urine testing at my job. Does anyone know of any stores where I can purchase a detox drink before I leave Amsterdam? Thanks.
