I am a Canadian Citizen, I'm 18 years old, and thinking about moving to Portugal. The main reason is to play football, learn Portuguese and discover the wonderful culture, as well as explore other parts of Europe. My question is how can I get a visa to work and live there? What do I need to do, and how long would you need to stay to become a citizen? Thanks for any help you can give me!

I'm leaving in Jan. for an exchange program in Portugal. I emailed the consulate in San Francisco (you'll have to contact one in Canada) and asked for visa requirements. The guy emailed me back this list (it could be quite different from one you might have to do, but it's a start): CONSULATE GENERAL OF PORTUGAL S. FRANCISCO - CALIFORNIA REQUIREMENTS FOR RESIDENCY VISAS TO PORTUGAL (Sections 1 and 2 for all applicants, subsequent section(s) as pertains to each applicant) 1VISA REQUIREMENTS One application form per passport holder (block printed or typewritten, please use only forms we supply you). One color passport photo size 2†x 2†facing forward. (Do not staple the photo to the application form). Write declaration of intent and economical status (description of yourself /purpose for staying in Portugal), including address where staying in Portugal, email address if applicable and all contact information. Police clearance issued within last 90 days (issued by local department - stating police record or lack thereof – for any applicant age 13 or older). Date issued must be clearly indicated. One photocopy of passport – main information page and any subsequent page with visa stamps. Medical certificate issued within last 90 days (simple statement showing that you are in good health including legible Doctors signature) Doctors name and date issued must be clearly indicated. Submissions by mail – must include notarization of applicants signature. If a minor, include parental consent form. Proof of health/accident insurance is required. Holders of domestic insurance without travel insurance need to provide declaration from the insurer that their coverage is valid in all Schengen states equal to 30,000 Euros. Processing fees of the above items – Residence/Study/ Temporary Long Stay/Work = $27.35. If visa is approved the following amounts are due in addition to the aforementioned processing costs - Temporary Long Stay $88.89/Residence or Work $109.40/ Study No Additional Charge. j) Requerimento - Registo Criminal, a form we provide you must be completed, signed and returned with the above. REFERENCE IN PORTUGAL, PREFERABLY THOSE WHO WOULD STAND AS GURANTORS We only need one reference who can be your lawyer, power of attorney, land lord, Dean of Admissions etc. who are Nationals of the European Community or hold Permanent Residence in Portugal. Have them indicate their name, address, phone number, citizenship – Include Copy of National ID or Residence. 3IF WORKING FOR SOMEONE Copy of work contract (authenticated by notary in Portugal) Contracts for salaried workers require prior approval from IEFP (Instituto de Emprego e Formação Profissional or from IGT (Inspecção Geral do Trabalho) if relevant. 4SELF EMPLOYED Proof that you are entitled to work in Portugal Photocopies providing transfer of funds to Portuguese banks Legalized copy of the registration proving establishment of commercial enterprise d) Declaration stating applicant’s official residence FOR BUSINESS Declaration passed by the Institute of Foreign Investment (ICEP) about the intended investment Photocopies of document(s) authorizing transfer of private capitals to Portuguese banks, issued by the Central bank (Banco de Portugal or its equivalent) Legalized copy of the registration of the corporation Declaration stating applicants official residence 5FOR PENSIONERS Must show proof of pension, total amount per month, and how the funds will be transferred to Portugal 6A PERSON LIVING ON HIS INCOME Movable Property Photocopies of a document authorizing the transfer of private capitals to Portuguese banks, issued by the Central bank (Banco de Portugal or an equivalent) = $3,000 per person Document confirming having deposited in Portuguese banks a sum equivalent to at least the the minimum monthly wage of the country of origin b) Immovable property Document of ownership Authenticated photocopies of updated leases and documents proving that the income is deposited in Credit Institutions in Portugal Hmm it won't let me answer again for some reason.
